August 15, 2008 – Dome Rock
About 1/2 mile east of the Great Western Divide Highway lies the granite crown of Dome Rock, an easy scramble of 100 yards or so from the parking area at the end of a dirt road. Our nephew Jacob and friend Eileen were joining us for a weekend of camping at Quaking Aspen, so this little trip to Dome Rock was the perfect excursion once we finished breakfast. The views were wonderful, though obscured a little by some late morning haze. We were inspired at the sight of The Needles to the north and decided that we’d hike up to the fire lookout there after lunch.
