August 13, 2009 – Salmon Creek
We took Jacob, our nephew, camping again, this time at Horse Meadow up on the Kern Plateau. The campground sits at about 7,400′ a couple of miles west of Big Meadow – we had first camped here when our kids were small back in the mid-90’s. It was probably down in the 20’s at night – cold enough for us to be quite uncomfortable – but at least we didn’t have to deal with bears as at Quaking Aspen the year before. After setting up camp, we wandered east along Salmon Creek to some natural swimming holes carved into the granite by the flowing water. It was very easy walking through a lovely wooded canyon, eventually emerging onto open slabs 1-1/2 miles from camp, across which flows the creek. We spent about an hour or so soaking our feet and exploring the slabs before returning to our camp for dinner.
