November 17, 2011 – Cerro Alto
Hikefest Day 4. We decided to hit the literal high point of the week by hiking Cerro Alto, a summit near the end of West Cuesta Ridge that overlooks Morro Bay. We had read about the outstanding views from the top and how one could see all the way from Big Sur in the north to Point Sal in the south, but even the best descriptions could not compare with being there for real. The fantastic scenery came at a price, though, this being the steepest trail of the week by far, rising some 1,600 feet in 2 miles. Still, this hike instantly became one of our favorites, well worth the effort. We climbed the western of two trails that head south from Cerro Alto campground and returned via the longer eastern route. The only disappointment of the day was not having a better camera with us, BlackBerry photos being all we have.
