January 27, 2012 – Oats Peak/Valencia Peak (3x)
A beautiful, cloudless day in Montana de Oro State Park, and our destination was 1,373′ Oats Peak. We hiked up the south side of the Islay Creek canyon to a saddle just east of Valencia Peak, thinking the next hill was Oats Peak. To our surprise, Oats was three small summits and another 3/4 mile away further east – the trail followed the undulating contours of the ridgeline, requiring a sequence of elevation gains and losses, but we got there eventually without too much additional effort. As we ate our customary lunch on top, the steep east face of Valencia Peak kept calling out to us, so we decided to tag its summit as well on the way back. After descending the Oats Peak trail to the saddle, we found the lateral trail, quite steep and overgrown in places, that ascends Valencia’s northeast shoulder. After reaching Valencia Peak’s summit for the third time (and enjoying both the best weather and views of our various visits here), we then descended to meet the Oats Peak trail again via a cutoff below Valencia’s west ridge.
