April 28, 2012 – Cayucos Point
Jane’s Aunt Bev met us for an easy walk along the bluffs north of Cayucos. Chris was hoping to duplicate the hike we did last November but mistook the trailhead and wound up parking about two miles short of where he intended. We ended up walking south from Hwy 1 at San Geronimo Road to the ocean, then west out to and past Cayucos Point, returning to the highway and following it east to the car. In contrast to our first visit here last November, the grass was green and fresh and the wildflowers were abundant and colorful. The trail along the bluffs undulates peacefully along the clifftops, elevation gains and losses barely perceptible as we made our way west. We again saw egrets, and Chris snapped a picture of one wading in a calm pool of ocean water below the bluff. After passing Cayucos Point, we continued west to the more jagged Point 2 (so labeled on the map), a prominent headland that juts southward into the ocean. We eventually reached the landmark hill where we had started our previous trip and decided it was time to turn around – we chose to walk a more direct route along the highway back to the van. The camera battery was dead so iPhone photos only.
