June 30, 2013 – Koki Beach
We decided to continue exploring the area around Hana after checking into our hotel and cleaning up. It was early in the evening and our hotel room was a studio condo with a full kitchen – we had brought food to cook for dinner, so we figured we had time for a couple of more hikes before dark. We drove a short distance back south out of town to Koki Beach, on a north-facing cove with an old, wooded cinder cone marking its west end. Less of a hike than just a local point of interest, there were some large family groups getting dinner ready in pavillions along the beach, as well as some campers parked along the road that ran parallel to the water. We walked down the beach west to the cinder cone headwall, then back east to where the sandy beach gave way to a rocky point – Alau Island stood guard offshore, and we watched the waves roll in over the fist-sized rocks. After a few minutes taking in the scenery, we walked through the lava formations away from the water and returned to our car via the road – now back to Hana.
