November 23, 2013 – Elfin Forest Preserve
A second hike we wanted to do with the boys was another boardwalk-based walk through the Elfin Forest Preserve in Baywood Park. Tucked between residential housing and the southeastern corner of Morro Bay State Park, the preserve is accessed via multiple footpaths extending from various neighborhood cul-de-sacs, each of them reaching a boardwalk constructed in a mile-long loop through the property. One of these paths, at the north end of 16th Street, was built for wheelchairs, so it was here where we embarked upon our next excursion after lunch back at the trailer. The boardwalk is very sturdy and stable, the east-west portions contouring along the terrain without much elevation gain or loss, while the two extremes of the oval that trend north-south are steeper as the walker transitions from an upper shelf to the lower or vice versa. We walked east first, met by sweeping views of Cerro Cabrillo and Hollister Peak, then north and west overlooking Morro Bay, its beautiful estuary, and Black Hill. At the northwestern extreme of the loop, a decked spur trail leads out to a viewing area that is the closest one can get to the bay – the views here were wonderful. Ollie and Jude walked most of the way – both boys were excited to be released from the stroller, and they energetically explored every inch of the wooden pathway as it twisted along through the brush. Ollie has been walking for months now, but, when he runs, he tends to fearlessly lead with his head, causing much consternation for his mother. Jude, who is very much into marching bands, made the most of his opportunity to march along playing his make-believe tuba – so fun. We discovered a second overlook where the loop returns to the upper level before we turned back east, following the gentle incline to where we had first entered the loop. This is another great hike for families of all ages – the slopes are very gentle, and we expect sunsets here would be most remarkable.
