April 30, 2015 – Andreas Canyon
Part II of our Indian Canyons adventure led up Andreas Canyon and back, a short mile-long excursion along a perennial creek that was flowing nicely. Similar to Palm Canyon, there was a picnic area at the mouth of the canyon, and we quickly passed through it as we made our way west up the creek. There were more people here than at Palm Canyon, mostly young families whose kids were frolicking in the cool water. We wandered casually upstream beneath towering cliffs to the north, eventually reaching a fence that separates reservation land from a tract of private homes beyond. A tribal ranger was at the fence, likely resting on his own patrol through the area, and he informed us that the southern half of the loop, which we had intended to take down the other side of the creek, led further away from the water and through far less shade. We opted to retrace our steps, stopping for a few minutes to sit on some creekside rocks for a snack. The sound of the water was most refreshing, making us forget for a moment that the temperature was already in the high 90s, and we enjoyed it for a short while before returning to the car. A lovely place, this.
