June 26, 2015 – Blue Ridge Trail (2x)
We had planned to hike Waterman Mountain today, but Jane realized she hadn’t brought any socks when we were about halfway to the trailhead. By the time we got back to the cabin, it was in the 80s in Wrightwood and we figured we should do something a little closer to home. We had hiked up the Blue Ridge Trail about 13 months ago and, even though we had visited the same area on Blue Ridge via the PCT our last time out, we figured the 4-mile up-and-back would do. The skies were filled with high clouds which gave us a little break from the direct sun, so the heat was manageable as we set out up the trail – the on-and-off breeze was refreshing too. We were surprised at the amount of wildflowers – there must have been two dozen or more varieties as we made our way to the top of the ridge. It had gotten sunnier by the time we made it to the ridgeline, and the Blue Ridge Campground had several parties in its sites. We managed to find the last shady table on which to eat our lunch, and we meandered south through the campground to the PCT for some photos before heading back (we had considered continuing east on the PCT to Guffy CG and back for a 10-mile roundtrip but thought better of it given the midday heat). The return trip was uneventful, and ours was still the only car at the trailhead when we came down.
