October 25, 2019 – Mt. Akawie
In Wrightwood for the weekend, we got a short hike in up Mt. Akawie, which sits above Cooper Canyon and north of Hwy 2 near Waterman Mountain. Named for a long-time Sierra Club leader in the Angeles chapter, the rounded peak is reached via an old jeep road coupled with a well-defined use trail, amounting to just 3/4-miles from highway to summit. We took our time getting to the trailhead, an unmarked turnout a few hundred yards east of Cloudburst Summit, and began following the gated roadbed north and east away from the car. After a quarter mile, we found the noted use trail heading northward up a gully, which we followed up the mountain’s west shoulder until reaching the old road again (the use trail cuts off a couple of hundred yards of distance, but one can alternately stay on the old road and get to the same place). Crossing the road, we picked up the trail again and continued eastward, climbing through several rolling hillsides and dells until reaching the flat, expansive summit area, spying what looked to be the high point a few dozen yards to the east. Perched prominently atop the small jumble of rocks that form the summit block was the HPS register, which we signed before heading back after a few minutes’ rest. Having brought some plastic bags for the purpose, we spent some time gathering sugar pine cones on our way back to car, following the road back down instead of the cutoff trail. Though wooded at the top and not offering much in the way of views, this was a nice way to get out and stretch our legs, and the hike was pleasant and scenic enough to say the least.

Haven’t seen many hikes lately. Have I missed them or have you not gone lately? Sure is beautiful.
