July 8, 2020 – Blue Ridge Trail (5x)
Trying to keep up the momentum, we got out again the next night after work, this time headed for the Blue Ridge trail. And again we picked up some sandwiches at Jensen’s for dinner, this time Chris choosing to duplicate Jane’s all-veggie selection as his own (see, the diet nagging/coaching is working already). The ascent was uneventful, spending nearly all the 2-mile hike in the deep shade of Blue Ridge as we climbed 1,100′ splitting the gap between the Mountain High East and West ski areas. At the top, we found an empty table in the Blue Ridge campground (probably the same one we used when we walked up here from Inspiration Point a few weeks ago) and ate our tasty, if a little less hearty, dinner. There were a few campers around, including a family with numerous kids who appeared to have backpacked in (not sure how that works out for an on-foot overnight, since there’s no water here and one has to carry it up), and we started back down as soon as we finished eating. We had seen several parties coming down as we headed up, and we were most likely the last ones off the mountain when we arrived back at the car about 8pm. Having hiked this, at least in part, five times before, this was familiar ground – the only thing of real interest were reports a couple of days later that a mountain lion was sighted near the trailside bench halfway up the ridge. They’re definitely out there, and we’re happy to have – so far – not made the acquaintance of any.
