April 24, 2021 – Lightning Ridge
Just west of Inspiration Point near Wrightwood lies the high point of the part of Blue Ridge west of Highway 2, known locally as Lightning Ridge. We took Jude and Hattie on a short exploratory hike of the hilltop, walking up the PCT a few hundred yards to a use trail departing northward toward the summit. We turned up this path, soon encountering a new firebreak (likely built when the Bobcat Fire was burning not far to the west in 2020) which we followed to the top. Not surprisingly, the views were great, similar to but a lot more open than those from the PCT below us to the south. After a short time in the cool breeze on the summit, we descended cross-country down the west side of the hill and found a different use trail Chris had explored with the boys a couple of years earlier, and this we followed south back to the PCT. Turning east, we continued the level traverse below the ridgetop back to the downhill section leadin gto the trailhead. Just 8/10ths of a mile over 45 minutes but a nice way to stretch our legs on a cool mountain evening.
